How much does it cost to pump a septic tank?

A routine residential pump-out starts from $400. That is our septic tank pumping cost in Raleigh, NC, where most of our work is, and the starting price is the same across the Triangle counties we serve.

It is a starting price because no two tanks are alike. Lids sit at different depths, and one tank was pumped last year while the next has not been opened in a decade. What moves the price is listed below.

We are a family company based in Durham, 30 years in business, and Bobby Davis Jr. has 50 years in the trade. We are an NC Level IV installer, certificate 3402, fully insured and licensed. Call (919) 481-6929, describe the house, and we will tell you what to expect. The full steps are on our septic tank pumping page.

What changes the price of a septic pump-out

Six things move the price from the starting number. Tell us about each when you call.

A riser is the one item here you can change for good. We price it on the visit, once we see how deep the lid is, and it saves the digging on every visit after. Ask about risers when you call (919) 481-6929.

What a pump-out from us includes

Every pump-out follows the same steps. We find the lids, probing from where the sewer line leaves the house if nothing marks them, and dig to them if there is no riser. We pump every compartment until the solids, scum and liquid are out. We check the baffles and the outlet tee, clean the effluent filter and watch the flow into the distribution box. We note the sludge level so you know when to book the next one, and we backfill when we are done.

Pumping is not a repair. If we find a broken baffle, a failing box or roots, we tell you what we saw and you decide.

Pumping on time costs less than the repair it prevents

Skip pump-outs and the solids keep building. They reach the outlet, the filter clogs, and what gets past it goes to the distribution box and the drainfield lines. A pump-out cannot undo that, and drainfield repair costs far more than the years of pump-outs it would have taken to avoid it.

So the cheapest pump-out is the one on schedule. Read how often to pump a septic tank in NC to place your house on the 3 to 5 year range. Backing up now? Our emergency septic service is available 24/7.

What to watch for on any quote

Ask what the price covers. A pump-out should include finding the lids, digging down to them, pumping every compartment and a look at the baffles, the outlet tee and the filter. If a quote is for pumping only, ask what happens when the lids are buried.

Ask about anything you cannot explain. A sludge treatment add-on, or a fee nobody mentioned on the phone, is worth a question first. We add neither to a pump-out, and we tell you what moves the price before we start.

Compare like with like. A lower number that skips the dig, or leaves out the filter and the baffles, is a different job. A price with no description of the tank behind it is a guess. Buying a house on septic? Ask for a septic inspection along with the pump-out.

Septic pumping cost questions

What homeowners ask about septic pumping cost in NC before they book septic tank pumping.

A routine residential pump-out with us starts from $400. The six things above can move the price from there. Senior, veteran, neighborhood and multi-tank discounts apply, one per job. Call (919) 481-6929 and describe the house.

Pumping on schedule is the cheaper way to own a septic tank. A tank that has gone for years is heavier work, and how long since the last pump-out moves the price. The bigger saving is the drainfield: pumped before the solids reach the outlet, they stay out of the filter, the box and the lines.

Finding the lids and digging to them are two of the steps in every pump-out. How much digging it takes moves the price: lids at the surface or on risers are quick, and lids under the yard take longer. If you know where the lids are, or have the county permit drawing for the address, tell us when you call.

It can. After-hours and emergency calls are one of the things that move the price. If your tank is backing up now, call (919) 481-6929 any time, day or night, or read about our emergency septic service.

We price a riser on the visit, once we see how deep the lids are. It is an upfront cost, and with the lid at the surface nobody has to probe the yard or dig to find it again.

Every 3 to 5 years for a typical 1,000 gallon household tank, sooner with a garbage disposal or a full house. See how often to pump a septic tank in NC to place your house.
