Where Fuquay-Varina's septic homes are
The middle of Fuquay-Varina is on town sewer. The septic tanks are in the older neighborhoods and on the county land around town, toward Willow Spring and Angier and out to the Harnett County line.
The ground changes on the way south. On the Wake side it is red clay, which drains slowly, so a drainfield can sit wet after a long rain. Toward Harnett County the ground turns sandier and drains faster, because that is where the Coastal Plain begins. On the sandier side rain drains away quickly, so a patch of yard that stays soft and smelly for days is worth a call.
The towns next door are on our route too: septic pumping in Holly Springs, septic pumping in Garner and septic tank pumping in Apex. We pump across Wake County and Harnett County.
Septic pumping in Fuquay Varina, NC: what a visit looks like
Every pump-out runs in the same order, from the lids to the filter.
- We find the lids first. We start where the sewer line exits the house and probe from there.
- If the tank has no riser, we dig the lids out.
- Every compartment gets pumped until the tank is empty.
- We look at the baffles and the outlet tee. A crack or a clog there lets solids slip toward the field.
- We clean the effluent filter, and we tell you if it is damaged.
- We check the sludge level, which shows how quickly this tank fills.
- If the lids are deep, we offer to set a riser, and then the next visit starts at ground level.
A routine residential pump-out is from $400. Tank size, lid depth, access and the time since the last pump-out move the price from there. The usual advice is every 3 to 5 years, and the full routine is on our septic pumping page.

Septic permits in Fuquay-Varina
Wake County Environmental Services issues septic permits in Fuquay-Varina, not the town. You need none for a routine pump-out. Drainfield repair, or a replacement tank, takes a county repair permit. For a new system the county issues an improvement permit and a construction authorization before anyone digs, inspects the work afterward, and then issues an operation permit. The state rules are 15A NCAC 18E.
Most Angier addresses go through Harnett County Environmental Health instead. Not sure which side of the line you are on? Call us with the address, and we will point you to the right office.

Fuquay-Varina homeowners ask
The questions we hear when people near Fuquay-Varina call about a tank.
How do I tell if my house is on septic or town sewer?
Look at your bills. If the town does not charge you for sewer and there is a lid somewhere in the yard, you own the tank and the field, and the job of looking after them. The older neighborhoods and the county land around town are the likely ones. Wake County Environmental Services keeps the permit record for your address.
How much does a pump-out cost in Fuquay-Varina?
Routine residential pump-outs are from $400. The price moves with the size of the tank, how deep the lids are and how much digging it takes to uncover them. A riser, the time since the last pump-out and a second tank play a part. Four discounts exist, senior, veteran, neighborhood and multi-tank, and a job gets one of them.
I live near Angier. Which county office handles my septic?
It depends on which side of the county line the lot is on, not on the mailing address. Most Angier addresses are in Harnett County and go through Harnett County Environmental Health. Most Fuquay-Varina addresses go through Wake County Environmental Services, and a lot near the line can be either. Either way, a county repair permit comes before any drainfield repair or tank replacement. Tell us your address and we will say which office to call.
Is a wet spot in my yard a failing drainfield?
Not always. On the clay toward town, a long rain can leave the yard soggy for days. Toward Harnett County the sandier ground drains faster, so a soft patch that lingers there is more of a warning. If it smells, or stays wet in dry weather, use less water and call us. We pump the tank first and watch how the water moves into the distribution box. For failing lines, read about drainfield repair and replacement.
I have no idea where my tank is. Can you find it?
Yes. Finding the lids is part of the job. We probe from the spot where the sewer line leaves the house. Buried lids get dug out. A permit drawing from the county shows where the tank sits, and once the lids are open we can add a riser so they sit at the surface next time.
