Distribution Box Repair and Replacement in the Triangle

What a septic distribution box does
Between your tank and your drainfield sits a small box, buried in the yard. Liquid leaves the tank through the outlet line, enters the septic distribution box, and splits across the drainfield lines. Every line is supposed to get an equal share.
When the box sits level, nobody thinks about it. When it tips, cracks or clogs, one line gets nearly all the flow and the others sit dry. That line saturates and you get one soggy strip of yard while the rest of the lawn looks fine. The field is not dead, it is lopsided, and that is often a box problem.
Here the usual causes are settling and roots. Dense Triassic clay under much of Durham, Morrisville, southern Cary and Apex swells and shrinks, so a box set years ago drifts out of level. Roots follow the water into the inlet and outlets. A box near a driveway gets driven over, and the lid or walls crush.
What a distribution box replacement involves
If the box is cracked, crushed or corroded, a patch will not hold and we replace it. The job runs like this:
- Dig down to the old box and disconnect the inlet and outlet lines.
- Clear roots and debris out of the pipes that fed it.
- Set the new box on firm, compacted ground so it stays level.
- Reconnect the line from the tank and every drainfield line, and seal the joints.
- Level each outlet so every line takes an equal share.
- Backfill, and bring the lid up to grade on a riser if you want it easy to find next time.
A sound box that is only tipped or full of roots is often cleared and reset instead. Pumping keeps solids from reaching the box, so stay on a septic tank pumping schedule: every three to five years is the usual advice for a 1,000 gallon tank.
How we find it, and when it is the drainfield
Most homeowners have no idea where the box is. We start at the tank, because the outlet line leads to it. We check the liquid level, the outlet tee and the effluent filter, then follow the line, probe the yard and dig to the lid. A full tank or a plugged filter may be the whole problem, and we say so before we dig a second hole.
Once it is open we check whether it is level, cracked or full of roots, and whether every outlet carries flow. A level, clean box with a soaked field downstream points to the field itself. That is a different job: drainfield repair and replacement. If roots did the damage, see root blockage removal.
Work on the drainfield side of a system goes through the county, for example Wake County Environmental Services or Durham County Public Health Environmental Health. Depending on the job, a repair permit may be needed before we dig, and we tell you which.

Questions about your septic distribution box
Straight answers from the crew that digs them up.
How do I know my distribution box has failed?
The classic sign is one wet strip of yard over a single drainfield line while the rest stays dry. Slow drains and a sewage smell near the field can go with it. A full tank or a clogged filter looks the same, so we check those first. Call (919) 481-6929 and describe the yard to us.
Can you fix a distribution box without replacing it?
Often. A sound box that is tipped or full of roots can be cleared, leveled and reset. A box that is cracked, crushed or corroded gets replaced.
How long does a distribution box last?
A box in stable ground with a closed lid can last decades. Clay movement, roots and vehicle traffic shorten that.
Do I need a county permit to replace a distribution box?
The county environmental health office may require a repair permit. The county decides what applies to your property. Give us the address and we tell you what to expect.
What does a distribution box repair cost?
We cannot give you a number until we see the job. The price moves with how deep the box is, how easy it is to reach, and whether it needs replacing or just a reset. Ask us about discounts for seniors, veterans, neighborhoods and multi-tank homes.
